Impersonation Scams Continue

Scams

March 2, 2023

Many organizations and vendors issue security alerts to consumers regarding new account activity or changes through various methods of communication. The NJCCIC continues to receive reports of impersonation scams in which threat actors research their target and pretend to be trusted sources, such as legitimate businesses, banks, and officials from government agencies or entities, including the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Threat actors lure their targets with various personalized social engineering tactics—including SMiShing and vishing —to persuade them into divulging sensitive information or performing an action, such as wiring funds. We
highlight several impersonation scams and provide recommendations to educate users and organizations to reduce the likelihood of victimization. Learn more.
