AgentTesla Campaign Malware
The NJCCIC observed multiple phishing campaigns sent from both US and non-US top-level domains (TLD) to New Jersey State employees to deliver the AgentTesla malware, an advanced backdoor used to steal credentials and data. Read for tips to avoid this scam.
QR Code Phishing Campaigns
The NJCCIC recently observed two phishing campaigns in which threat actors included suspicious links via QR codes. Quick Response (QR) codes are square barcodes that can be scanned by smartphones to quickly send users to a website, download an application, or direct payments.
Maui Wildfire Charity Scams
Individuals seeking to donate to relief efforts are targeted in charity scams initiated by threat actors using social engineering tactics through emails, SMS messaging, phone calls, and via social media. Such can be seen in the aftermath of the recent devastating wildfires in Maui.
Fraudulent Payment Receipts
Users continue to receive emails referencing payment receipts for anti-virus solutions they did not purchase. Unlike from invoice scams, these emails do not request payment but rather claim that a payment has already been made. Read to learn how to spot this scam.
SEO Poisoning and Malvertising
SEO is the process of improving the quality & quantity of website traffic. SEO poisoning is when threat actors strategically create malicious websites and use techniques such as keyword stuffing to insert irrelevant keywords into a web page’s text, meta tags, and other areas of the website.
Data Hostages – A Common Cyber Threat
Stealing data from victim networks prior to the encryption process provides cyber threat actors the means to apply additional pressure on victims to pay ransom demands in hopes of preventing their data from being publicly exposed, and is very effective.
“Christmas in July” Phishing Campaign
Phishing emails remain a top social engineering tactic for cybercriminals. These emails may request recipients open an attachment, click a link, provide account credentials, transfer funds, or disclose sensitive information. This article shows samples and critical warning signs.
Impersonating Financial Institutions
The NJCCIC received reports of targeted, well-crafted phishing emails claiming to be from financial institutions, specifically Citizens Bank. In the above example, the sender’s display name impersonates Citizens Bank to convey legitimacy. Click to learn more.
Payment Phishing Lures
The NJCCIC received reports of a phishing campaign with Aetna-themed lures attempting to deliver malware. The sender’s display name impersonates the managed healthcare company to appear legitimate, and the sender’s email address contains innocent keywords.
