Browsing Techniques: Unsafe Browsers
Mitigation
October 26, 2023
Let’s take a quick look at simple actions everyone can take to improve cyber safety. By incorporating these safe browsing techniques into your regular computer habits, you help keep yourselves safe from malicious forces.
- Hover before you click – when hovering over a link (of any kind!), you can see the destination address, usually in the bottom left-hand corner of your browser.
- Avoid ads – when doing a Google search, scroll past any results prefaced by “ad” to ensure the web page is legitimate.
- Learn to read a URL – there are parts of a website’s address that can be red flags!
- The certificate indicates there is a secure, encrypted connection between your computer and the website. Look for https:// whenever entering personal data – especially with online banking!
- The domain indicates the type of site you are visiting. Look for .edu on university web pages, .com for standard pages, and .gov for government pages. Other domains are not inherently dangerous, but they can indicate a red flag!
