Vulnerable 23andMe Data

Vulnerability

March 27, 2025

The DNA genetic testing company 23andMe recently filed for bankruptcy and is preparing to sell the company. In the meantime, the 23andMe platform holds a vast amount of personal and potentially valuable data that may be at risk of not being protected before the sale. Additionally, the data may not be secured under the new entity, and the privacy policies for new customers or new data collection may be revised.

23andMe customers in certain states and countries may have legal protections to request that an organization delete their data. Regardless of residency, 23andMe customers are advised to download anything they want to retain from 23andMe’s service and then delete genetic data, destroy test samples, and revoke permission for the genetic data to be used for research. More information can be found in the Wired post.
