2024 Ransomware Trends So Far
Ransomware remains a prevalent threat as threat actors use extortion tactics to pressure victim organizations to pay the ransom. They deny access to encrypted files, steal data, and threaten a data breach by posting on public ransomware leak sites or releasing the stolen data.
2FA Campaigns Target Government
A sophisticated phishing campaign targeting Microsoft Teams was identified using the Tycoon 2FA Phish-kit phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) platform to steal session cookies and bypass two-factor authentication (2FA) protection. The victim is sent a link to a malicious phishing page.
Elder Fraud Scams Persist
The NJCCIC received reports involving elder fraud scams that reflect recent tactics observed by the FBI. The scammers typically employ a multi-layered approach, impersonating associates of a technology company, a financial institution, and US government officials.

As students, staff, and caregivers prepare for the new school year, so do cybercriminals. Schools often have limited resources, face persistent cyber threats, and are susceptible to physical hazards. These cyber threats can disrupt essential services and potentially compromise safety.
Cyberattacks Disrupting Patient Care
Recent ransomware attacks on OneBlood, Synnovis, and Octapharma by Russian cybercrime ransomware gangs have resulted in a massive disruption to patient care. On April 15, the BlackSuit ransomware group attacked blood plasma provider Octapharma.
Magniber Attacks Targeting Home Users
Researchers reported a global spike in Magniber ransomware attacks targeting home users. Since July 20, one website received almost 720 submissions from infected users. Magniber was first discovered in 2017 and is believed to be a successor to Cerber ransomware.
Pension Plan Help Scams
Threat actors continue to target pension plans and use social engineering tactics to initiate contact and appear legitimate. They may contact their targets by email, phone, text message, social media, or online advertisements and falsely claim to offer a “free” review of their plan.
